Filtration: higher MERV is not automatically better
A filter rated MERV 13 captures far more fine particulate than a basic MERV 6, which is genuinely useful for pollen and dust. The catch is that a denser filter also resists airflow, and most residential systems were designed around a much lower resistance. Drop a thick high-MERV filter into an undersized filter slot and airflow falls, which hurts capacity, comfort, and equipment life.
The way around it is more filter area rather than more resistance: a deeper media cabinet, or a larger filter surface, so higher filtration does not choke the system. Measuring static pressure before and after tells you whether the system can actually live with the filter.
Humidity is the other half of comfort
Indoor relative humidity between roughly 30 and 50 percent is the usual target. Above that range, summer air feels warmer than the thermostat suggests and conditions favor mold and dust mites. Below it, winter air produces dry skin, static, and shrinking trim and flooring.
Summer humidity here is often a runtime problem rather than an equipment problem. Oversized cooling equipment satisfies the thermostat fast and shuts off before it has dehumidified, leaving a house that is cool and clammy. Where cooling alone cannot keep up, whole-home dehumidification handles it directly, and in homes with damp crawlspaces that is frequently where the moisture is coming from.
Ducts and ventilation
Duct problems undo good filtration. Leaks on the return side pull in crawlspace, attic, and wall-cavity air along with whatever dust and moisture it carries, which is a common reason a house stays dusty no matter how good the filter is.

How often should I change my air filter?

Will a better filter help with allergies?
Higher-efficiency filtration does capture more pollen and fine dust, and it can help noticeably. The important part is fitting it without choking airflow, which usually means more filter area rather than simply a denser filter in the same slot.
Do I need duct cleaning?
Occasionally it is warranted, such as after construction or where there is confirmed contamination. More often, persistent dust is coming from return leaks, filter bypass, or a duct system pulling air from a crawlspace, and cleaning alone does not change that.
Why is my house humid even though the AC is running?
Frequently the cooling equipment is oversized for the load, so it satisfies the thermostat before it has removed much moisture. Duct leaks, high outdoor humidity, and a damp crawlspace all contribute. Dedicated dehumidification handles what cooling alone cannot.
Are UV lights and air purifiers worth adding?
